Style Diaries: Camille Hobson

Hi! For those who may not know you, can you introduce yourself and tell us a little bit about where you’re based and what you do?

Hi! My name is Camille; I’m a creative based in Los Angeles! I recently graduated from university with a bachelor’s in communications and media studies and am currently in the post-graduate experimental phase (which is honestly quite exciting). I’m really getting to know myself again and experiment creatively, part of which is allowing myself to have fun with art and fashion in my free time. I really find joy in looking for inspiration everywhere, whether that be in the books I read, nature, strangers, or even my own memories.

How would you say your surroundings have influenced your personal style?

I grew up with an artist for a mom, so I always felt like style and creative expression were important to me. Fashion is an extension of my personality, and I really love to lean into non-clothing-related sources of inspiration. I feel like the colors I lean towards are rich and warm colors that my mom usually paints with. I also just loved my home growing up, and I take so much inspiration from the space she created. I actually have a whole pinterest board of things and objects (including images of my own) that remind me of home that I revisit often. I love to incorporate things that are special to my childhood. I’ve recently been looking for abalone jewelry because I remember my mom using abalone shells as soap dishes growing up, and I feel like that’s a piece of home I can always keep with me. Things like that, I think, are the most special because they tell a story, so I definitely want that to show through my style.

Can you walk us through your thought process when you get dressed for the day? Are there any style rules you tend to inherently stick to when getting dressed?

Usually, I try to focus on a single item that would excite me most to wear. I’ve heard this referred to as a ‘hero’ piece before and that really changed the way I get dressed. If there’s one item I’m excited about or that always makes me feel good, I’ll try to start there and build around it. It just really helps when going out to have one great piece to focus on (especially because I am so indecisive and will tear apart my room if I’m trying everything on lol). It also helps narrow down other options of what will work with it.

What or who has been inspiring you lately?

I recently have gotten really into the human body as inspiration. I love it when design and fashion are really humanistic, and I feel like Black American culture does a really great job of incorporating interesting features. I love hair as a statement of its own with cool braids, I love grillz and super organically shaped jewelry. I think it’s also helping me to narrow down my closet if I can focus more on basics and make them interesting with accessories or emphasizing my favorite physical features. I also think it can feel super sexy and fun to find pieces that emphasize like a shoulder or collarbone! Like, “omg, she’s serving collarbone”...I love it.

Is there a specific trend or item that you’ve been eyeing to incorporate into your everyday style?

Unfortunately, I do not own a tooth grill of my own yet, but it’s been on my radar and I’m waiting to pull the trigger on that purchase. For now, I’ve been trying to build my accessory collection which is also super fun. I recently have been noticing more and more mixed metals, so that’s something I’ve been trying to do. Accessories are key and such a saving grace for simple looks.

Sort of in that same vein, in our hyper-online world where trends come and go at lightning speed, how do you navigate staying true to your personal style without being influenced by every new trend that pops up?

I think that a blessing and a curse in my life has been not being able to afford every single new item I wanted. I used to make a lot of my clothes. I learned to sew, crochet, thrift, and generally DIY, and I think it gave me a greater idea of what I wanted to put effort into (or money into if I couldn’t make it myself). Now, I definitely go back to my collection of images that feel like home to me to see if things I’m gravitating towards actually feel authentic to myself. I think being inspired by things that aren’t necessarily clothing items really helps me to be less influenced by trends, even though we’re all susceptible at times. I also try to force myself to wear items I have that are no longer “trending”, which does help me to think before I buy. Overall, slow consumption is the best bet.

In what outfit do you feel the most you?

I definitely feel the most “me” when I am wearing elevated basics with my greatest accessories, especially those that have been in my closet the longest. I recently have been wearing a lot of bangles and hats, and have been collecting really interesting bags. I don’t necessarily think that every outfit has to be the greatest thing I’ve ever put on, especially if I can’t relax and be comfortable. I really value movement and fun, so anything that restricts that is a no from me. I think accessories go a long way in making a simple outfit look great and to bring out some personality without sacrificing comfort.

Before we let you almost go, what’s one item that you think everyone should have in their closet?

I think everyone needs a good pair of 100% linen pants! They’re so versatile, long-lasting, and a staple piece. I also think natural fibers (especially vintage styles that are easy to find thrifting) are so great and can easily be kept and passed on. I absolutely love things that are well crafted, stuff that’s passed along from family and are super durable are some of my favorite go-to pieces.
