Style Diaries: Meet Lucille Sadek
Hi! Can you introduce yourself and tell us a little bit about where you’re based and what you do?
Hello, my name is Lucille. I live in Brooklyn, NY. I was born and raised in Tasmania which is a little island off the southern coast of Australia. In 2019 I moved to the States. Right now I work at the Guggenheim Museum in their marketing team.
How have your surroundings influenced your personal style?
Growing up in Australia and being at a distance from the rest of the world it’s very much normal to travel. So I feel I’ve always looked abroad (and traveled) for style inspiration. That being said I feel that my love of bold bright colors and stripes stemmed from my love of Modern art and growing up and admiring artists such as Joan Miro.
Where I lived in Australia, the weather was seasonal as it is in NY. In that way I feel as though I’ve always been used to wind, rain or shine in one day. I will say that living in a large city liberates you to really wear what you want to wear and not feel like you’re being judged by anyone for that. This can also mean you’re constantly inspired to look and feel your best which is fun.
The Melbourne look (where I spent a lot of time as an adult) is often all black, and I think I’ve carried that with me into my office looks.
How do you think your style has evolved as you’ve gotten older?
Perhaps when I was younger I’d impulse buy more often, but these days if I want something I’ll leave it in my cart for at least a week and if it’s on my mind, I take it as a sign. I see my nails as a platform for fun expression and that’s something I really look forward to curating each time I sit in the salon seat.
I’ve found that the older I get, the more I know what I like and don’t like. When it comes to my style, I still gravitate to certain colors: blues, pinks, tans, browns. I have always and will always love stripes! And always lean oversized for outerwear.
The jewellery I wear also never comes off (gold bracelet, two gold chains) and if I’m wearing earrings you can best bet it’s a pair of gold hoops. I also use Ebay to find a lot of vintage designer.
Can you walk us through your thought process when you get dressed for the day? Are there any style rules you tend to inherently stick to when getting dressed?
When getting ready I usually work around wanting to wear something specific, such as a new piece that I feel like wearing that day. And I’ll base the rest of the outfit around the said article of clothing. I always feel more comfortable in pants and jeans vs skirts so that is always the go to!
If I’m in a rush for work I will usually go for an all-black outfit — black pants and t-shirt or jumper which feels somewhat put together! I’m also chronically worried I’ll get cold, so more likely than not sporting a jacket or trench.
We’re finally moving into warmer weather! Do you have any go-to pieces you’re looking forward to wearing that will keep you cool without compromising your style?
Spring has seen me wearing cotton ballon style pants and silk scrunchies! The scrunchie I love in particular is white and from the brand, Bread. I’m really excited to wear boxer shorts this summer, and just being comfy in lighter fabrics with open shoes. You can’t ever go wrong with a cotton button up — it’s something I try to wear all year round but it’s a MUST for me in Spring/Summer. I’m also loving citrus colors such as limes and yellows.
What or who has been inspiring lately?
@Thankyouok’s style has always inspired me to wear more color. Old 80s films always inspire me. They really didn’t wear accessories yet still looked really put together which is kinda amazing.
Is there a specific trend or item that you’ve been eyeing to incorporate into your every day style?
More scrunchies and hair clips. My hair is so long but on days it’s dirty I’ve been donning a silk scrunchie and calling it a day. I feel like this Summer you may catch me in black flip-flops and more yellow.
What’s one item that you think everyone should have in their closet?
A crisp white t-shirt. This is something I’ll never get sick of wearing and I think everyone looks good in. You can’t beat it, except it does require repurchasing a few during those warmer months…My go to white t-shirt will be my I Love Hawaii one <3
In what outfit do you feel the most you?
It’d have to be a pair of baggy dark or light denim, gold hoops, my triangle MM6 bag and some kind of sneaker or open shoe situation. If it’s fall add in a fawn trench.
